How to fundraise is one of the difficulties for most community-based organizations. Most organizations have many ideas but no money to realize these plans. However, in general there is more money than ideas for HIV/AIDS projects. The problem is how to find these funds and generate them for your proposals. There are four main funding streams to be distinguished: (see: http://www.avert.org/aidsmoney.htm):
When searching for funds one must keep in mind that the purpose of the efforts is absolutely clear. Do keep several good proposals in stock until one of the funding organizations makes a call for a grant or proposal. Even when the deadline is near, you can submit your proposal because you already had one available. Don’t forget to fit it according to this specific call.
Furthermore check the various embassies in your country.
Many embassies have a small grants program where amounts around USD 20 000 are available. More often HIV/AIDS projecs by community organizations are eligible. These projects are also an excellent way to get to know an organization. Once a small project works out well some donors are interested in thinking up a bigger one.
All UN-agencies are obliged to make an effort to the global Aids response which makes it interesting to check, especially with the lesser known organizations who may be interested in a joint project.
Finally check the local European Union-agency (www.europeanunion.org) in your country in order to find out if they have grants for HIV/AIDS projects.
Do check websites of various HIV/AIDS organizations on a regular base to find out if they have calls for grants/proposals. Some more information on fundraising can be found on the following websites:
